So Much Family Fun!

We've had a week filled with family. Visits with aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins, galore.

First, Mimi, Aunt Trish, Bumpa, and Sarah came over to visit. Mimi got lots of laughs from Josh and the girls sure had fun playing together.

Then we did a day-trip to CT to see Daniel and Sofia. Sofia took right to Chris and sought him out all afternoon.

The next day we went to the Children's Museum with Mimi, Aunt Trish, Sarah, and Ryan.

Oh, and Happy 2011. We'll be ringing in the new year fast asleep. Layla is still waking at 5 am, so it's early to bed for us!

Young Love

We had a play date today with Mommy's friends, Mike and Jill, and their daughter, Isabella. Bella is 2 weeks older than Josh but you wouldn't know it based on their sizes!

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas!

It's beginning to taste a lot like Christmas, too. Between attending Mommy's staff party on Friday night, helping Mommy make oreo balls on Saturday, and assembling and eating her giant gingerbread man, Layla has definitely been enjoying herself this weekend.

Eating her creation....

Going back for more....

All dressed up for church, wearing the Christmas dress that Mimi made....

Josh has been having fun, too. While Layla was home with a sitter last night, Mommy and Daddy took Josh to Trina's Starlight Lounge. He was super baby while there, and didn't make a peep!

Here's a pic from last week. Looking big in his big boy clothes. Actually, he IS big....even wearing some 6-9 month onesies already!

Sleep Update

After a few weeks of 4:30 am wake-ups and a couple nights of frequent wakings (and screaming), Layla is back to sleeping through the night and waking up after 5:30.....for now. I'm pretty sure that she's teething, which is contributing to the difficulties, so I'm betting we're not out of the woods yet.

Last night Joshua slept through the night for the first time. He went almost 10 hours between meals. Hoping he does it again tonight! However, he has been a sleepy boy this afternoon. We got home from daycare around 4:30 and he didn't get out of his carseat until after 7! It's 8:30 now and he appears to have zero interest in being awake. Not sure what this means for the overnight hours!

I'm hoping that tomorrow night we may have time to sort pics from Layla's bday weekend and the last few weeks, so there should be something new up soon!

Falling Behind

I said we wouldn't be posting as much, and I guess I was right! Still no pics of Layla's bday, not to mention Thanksgiving. Until we find time to sort pics, here's a video of Layla and cousin Sarah during Layla's birthday "party".

Say Cheese!

Josh spent the last two weeks hanging out with Mimi and Bumpa. He must have had a great time because he's so full of smiles these days!

Celebration!

Layla has been asking to sit on the potty with more and more frequency lately. Tonight she finally went pee-pee in the potty! She seemed really surprised and confused about what was happening and didn't quite understand why Mimi, Bumpa, and Mommy were making such a big deal of it. She's still young to officially train, but it seems that this may be the beginning. My goal has been to have her trained during next summer, when I'm home from school and can spend more time with her on it. Perhaps we'll get there before then!

Tummy Time!

We haven't been doing enough of this, but here is Josh actually enjoying some tummy time. Josh tends to always look to his left, so in order to loosen some of the muscles in his neck, we need to make an effort to have him look to the right. Tummy time is a good opportunity for that. His head is starting to get just the slightest bit flat on one side, so we want to correct this before it gets worse!

In other news, Josh had his 2 month appointment the other day, at 9 weeks. He weighed in a 13lbs, 15.5oz.....92nd percentile :).

Oh Nuts!

A month or two ago Layla developed some red blotches on her face after eating a small amount of cashews. We immediately thought that she might be having an allergic reaction, but we were hopeful that it was due to the seasoning instead. Last week she had blood work (specifically, a RAST test) done to take a preliminary look at her allergies. The RAST measures the presence of antibodies to allergens.

According to the chart below, Layla scored a 0 for all nuts (including peanuts) except for pistachios and cashews (moderate level) and chestnut (low level). The test can produce false positives so we are being referred to an allergist for more complete testing. Until then, we are to avoid all nuts (even peanuts) and to keep Benadryl and an epi-pen on hand always.

Asthma, eczema (Layla has a pretty bad case), and food allergies often present together, so we should have seen this coming! Stay tuned until we learn more...

Back to a New Reality

This is my last weekend before I return to work on Monday. In some ways I'm looking forward to the return, but I also know that things are going to get even crazier around here (is that possible?!).

Mimi and Bumpa are coming to take care of Josh for two weeks, so it will be great to have them here for the transition.

After that, Grandmommy and Granddaddy come for a week and Thanksgiving.

Somewhere in there, Layla will turn 2.

Expect fewer posts until we figure out how this is all going to work!

Halloweekend

With Halloween on a Sunday, the whole thing really lasted 3 days. Poor Layla....every few hours we were telling her "It's time to be a pumpkin again!" What a busy, fun weekend it was, though.

Friday's Highlights
Layla dressed as a pumpkin for the party at daycare.
At night, Chris took her to the pumpkin carving party at church. She dressed up again. Not a ton for her to do there, but certainly lots to see.

Saturday's Highlights
8:30 Halloween parade in Lex Center...complete with a visit from Elmo. Layla didn't dare get too close!

9:30 Music class (still dressed as a pumpkin)

10:30 Halloween craft at the library (STILL a pumpkin)
3:00 Birthday/halloween party for a neighborhood 5 year old....highlight was the donut eating contest. Layla ripped her donut right off the string and had it half eaten before the contest started.

Off to the party:

The bday girl paints Layla's face:

Sunday's Highlights
Church - NOT dressed as a pumpkin
Trick or treating. Chris took Layla around in the wagon while Josh and I manned the door. Layla was just adorable when she came home and we were able to sneak her candy away from her after just a few pieces. Surprisingly, she seems to already have forgotten about it!

On their way!
Mommy steals Layla's candy when her back is turned!

Sleep Frustrations

Josh: Josh is almost a really great sleeper. Most nights he has his last meal by 8:30 (sometimes as early as 6 or so). Then he sleeps peacefully in his bassinet for about 5 hours. Some nights we don't hear from him until 1:30. He eats well at that time and then goes back down for another couple of hours. However, night after night after night, the hours between about 2 am and 5 am are ridiculously noisy. Josh does not cry and he does not open his eyes. But imagine every other sound a baby can make, and he's making it! It is impossible for us to sleep through this. Inevitably, I end up bringing him to sleep on me, which usually works for a bit, but not for too long, and it's not comfortable! Sometimes we end up sleeping in his rocking chair. Also not comfortable. I usually try to feed him when he “wakes” like this, but lately he hasn't even wanted to eat much. So I don't think he's hungry. He's just annoying! Then, like clockwork, at 5:00 he passes back out in his bassinet and sleeps peacefully for another hour or two. I don't get it! Hoping he figures this out before I go back to work in just over a week. We may switch to a bit of formula at night soon, so maybe that will help???

Layla: Layla recently transitioned to a toddler bed. She currently is sleeping in her old crib which we converted to a bed. We also picked up a toddler bed from some friends, since the crib will be Josh's at some point (how that might happen is for a whole other blog post!). Both beds are in her room now. We had to transition her because she was launching herself out of her crib at 5 in the morning on too many occasions. Now that she has freedom to move around in her room, we're experiencing a whole new set of unwanted behaviors. Ferber says this is not uncommon when the physical limits of the crib bars are removed. Now it's our job to set the limits. DOH! Everyone used to be so impressed at how easy it was for us to put Layla to bed. It could be done in a matter of seconds and she never hollered out for anything. Now she stalls until she can stall no more. Milk, stories, Mama, Dada, water, stories, Josh...you name it. And when we try to leave she tantrums and runs to the door screaming her head off. I did put a safety knob on the door, so at least she can't get out. There are nights that, when she finally does go down, she awakens in the night and repeats all of the requests and tantrums. So....we are getting better about setting limits. We have made it very clear...one book, brush teeth, one book, bed. However, she's 2 and doesn't completely get it. Since we've gotten strict and consistent she has been great. But every night when we put her down I feel like we're just crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. Oh, and did I mention that she's up at 5:30 almost daily (yesterday was 6:00, but today was 4:45!)?

Some day, when they're 7 and 5 or so, this will get better, right?
